Summary Information

  • Ownership: Essar Oil
  • Website: http://www.essar.com/
  • Wiki Page: Essar Vadinar Refinery
  • Location:
  • Capacity:
    • Before: 15.0 million tons/annum & 300,000 bbl/day
    • After: 17.25 million tons/annum & 375,000 bbl/day
  • Nelson Complexity: Will increase from 6.1 to 11.8
  • Project Stage: Completed
  • Expected Completion: 2012
  • Budget: $1.81 billion

The Project

  • Project Type: Expansion and Upgrade
  • Project Summary:
    • Addition of an Isomerisation unit, Delayed Coker Unit, Diesel Hydrotreater and VGO Hydrotreater
    • The project includes a revamp of the CDU (Crude Distillation Unit), the FCCU (Fluidised Catalytic Cracking Unit) and the SRU (Sulphur Recovery Unit)
    • Completion of the Phase 1 refinery expansion will increase production to 375,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd) from 300,000 bpsd and, more importantly, increase complexity from 6.1 to 11.8. The increased complexity means that the refinery can increase the proportion of heavy and ultra-heavy crudes that it processes, and produce a higher proportion of middle and light distillates.
  • Main Contractors
    • Toyo India - Engineering and procurement services for the Izomerisation Unit
  • Licences:
    • UOP: Isomerisation Unit, Diesel Hydrotreater

Refining Units

  • Isomerisation Unit
  • Delayed Coker Unit
  • Diesel Hydrotreater
  • VGO Hydrotreater
  • Hydrogen Manufacturing Unit
  • SRU (Sulphur Recovery Unit)

Terminal Capacity

  • Refined Products:

Crude Supply

  • The increased complexity means that the refinery can increase the proportion of heavy and ultra-heavy crudes that it processes
  • Domestic Mangala Crude Oil 15%-20% of basket

Products Produced

  • Elimination of negative crack FO, conversion into value added light and middle distillates

History

  • 2011 - Commissioning of a new Isomerization (ISOM) Unit
  • 2012 - Commissioning of the new Amine Regeneration Unit (ARU)
  • 2012 - Completion of the last unit

Other Information

  • A further expansion project is on hold
