The Project

  • Project Type: Greenfield Refinery
  • Project Summary: Petronas will construct a crude oil refinery with a capacity of 300,000 barrels a day, a naphtha cracker, petrochemicals and polymer facilities
  • Main Contractors
    • Technip: has been awarded a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract
    • Jacobs: basic engineering package for three sulfur recovery units (SRUs)
    • Technip: Management consultancy contract
    • Sinopec Engineering: EPC Contract for atmospheric distillation & residual oil hydrotreatment
    • Tecnicas Reunidas: EPCC - Hydrotreating units, Catalytic Reforming Unit, Hydrogen Production Units, Saturated Gas Plant, interconnection and flare
    • Punj Lloyd: RAPID Tank Farm project includes Project Management, Design, Engineering, Interface with other Contractors and third parties, Procurement, Construction, Inspection and Testing, Pre-Commissioning and Commissioning
  • Technip and Fluor: Utilities, interconnecting and offsites (UIO)
  • Licences:
    • Axens: Naphtha Hydrotreating (NHT), Octanizing, Prime-K, R2R residue fluidized catalytic cracking (RFCC), Prime G+catalytic process
    • Technip: Steam Methane Reformers

  • 2012 - Technip awarded a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract
  • 2012 - Project officially launched by the Sultan of Johor
  • 2012 - Jacobs awarded SRU contract
  • 2014 - Final investment decision taken by the Board
  • 2015 - Axens awarded licences for major units

Other Information

  • To support the development of RAPID, PETRONAS is also assessing the feasibility of developing a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving and re-gasification terminal and a co-generation power plant.
