Lateral Buckling and Pipeline Walking

CLOV Project
Angola KW1522 Total / Subsea7 2011 Lateral buckling and pipeline walking assessment and mitigation design for pipeline systems associated with the CLOV development, which is located in the north-western part of Block 17, deep offshore Angola, approximately 40km north-north-west of the Girassol Development and 200km to shore. It consists of four reservoirs in water depths ranging from 1050m to 1410m.
Jasmine Development
North Sea KW1441 ConocoPhillips / Subsea7 2011 Review of Subsea 7 Bundle Design Report, with particular reference to the flowline combined load checking and identification of applicable limit states. Commenting on the suitability of the approach taken to check the combined stress within the bundle system used to demonstrate acceptability to PD8010, i.e. FE modelling, application of forces, design inputs (i.e. props). Demonstrating that the design of the bundle does not require pre tensioning.

Saudi Arabia
KW1439 Saudi Aramco / NPCC 2011 Global buckling and pipeline walking assessment and mitigation design for pipeline systems associated with the Saudi Aramco’s Arabiyah and Hasbah Development.

Phase-I
UAE
KW1425 ADMA-OPCO / NPCC 2011 Global buckling and pipeline walking assessment and mitigation design for pipeline systems associated with ADMA-OPCO: NASR Phase 1 and UMM LULU Phase 1 Field Development.
Block 17/18 Gas
Export Pipeline Phase 2
Angola KW1371 TOTAL / Acergy 2010 Perform non-linear finite element analyses to assess the acceptability of the current design and conclude on whether additional mitigation measures are required. The assessments were based on DNV-OS-F101 and DNV-
RP-F110 and considered the interaction between lateral buckling and fishing gear interaction. The scope included the assessment of the sections of pipeline on the seabed, on the rocky outcrop region where free spans were expected and at the crossings along the pipeline.
Block 15
Angola KW1191 ExxonMobil / Acergy 2009 Review of the phase II lateral buckling analyses for a 12"
Gas Export flowline and completion of the detailed phase III assessments to establish the lateral buckling mitigation measure. Assessment of the pipeline response at uncontrolled, on-bottom buckles and at multi-crossings location using detailed non-linear FEA to ensure strains remain acceptable and the maximum pipe displacement at crossings within the supports. Assessment of the VIV response of the pipeline at the multiple crossing.

Greater Plutonio Angola KW0700 BP / Stolt Offshore 2008 Verification and assessment of the condition of the asinstalled production and water injection pipelines, with regards to their lateral buckling behaviour. This included assessment of mitigation measures to correct/trigger unformed lateral buckles and assess the effects of, and solution for, the vertical vibration of the pipelines at the buckle initiators, due to unexpected transient changes to the contents density.
In Amenas
Algeria
KW1071 BP 2008 Assessment of the integrity of a laterally buckled 12" condensate evacuation pipeline installed in the desert and therefore exposed to severe daily temperature variations.
Jasmine North Sea KW1028 ConocoPhillips 2008 The Jasmine Field is a rich gas condensate field located approximately 9km west of the existing Judy platform in ConocoPhillips J-Block operating unit. Concept design of the lateral buckling mitigation measures for the HPHT pipeline. As part of the concept design, different pipeline configuration options were considered, such as cooling spools with pipeline trenching and backfilling, shallow burial with intermediate spools and surface snake lay option.
Reliance Block KG-D6
India
KW0982 Reliance / Bechtel 2007 Verification of the lateral buckling and pipeline walking assessment of several 8", 10", 16" and 24" infield pipelines in deep water. The scope also included in the review of the design of the pipeline walking mitigation measures.
Akpo Development
Nigeria KW0981 Total / Saipem SA 2007 Verification of contractor’s lateral buckling and walking analysis for 10" infield deep water flowlines using detailed non-linear ABAQUS FE models.
Qatar II Pipelines
Gulf
KW0750 ExxonMobil / Technip 2006 Analysis of lateral buckling response of 34" and 38" concrete coated pipelines using detailed non-linear FEA. Design of robust mitigation measures to ensure reliable buckle initiation, and maximum strains and stress ranges within acceptable limits.
Haifa Bay Pipeline
Israel
KW0773 Petroleum & Energy
Infrastructures Ltd (PEI) 2006 Detailed analysis of lateral buckling response of 32" oil loading pipeline, required to replace existing line damaged due to lateral buckling in operation. Design of lateral buckling mitigation measures, including analysis and assessment using DNV RP-F110 methodology.

  1. North Idku Gas Field
    • Egypt
    • KW0791
    • North Idku Pipeline
    • NIPETCO / Genesis
    • 2006
    • Detailed analysis of lateral buckling and trawling response of exposed 16" gas export and 10" infield flowlines.
    • Developed mitigation measures to ensure strains remain acceptable, taking account of strain concentration at field joints. Construction costs minimised by avoidance of trenching.
