Apache Energy Limited
Double Island Project
Monopod platform design & installation

As part of its ongoing quest to develop previously uncommercial fields, Apache, in conjunction with ICON, developed the “Minnowpod” concept. This monopod substructure is used as the surface conductor on shallow water exploration wells which have a high probability of success.

ICON carried out the design, fabrication and installation, due to extensive experience with minimal facilities platforms offshore.

Apache Energy Ltd
Shallow Water Minimal Monopods
Design and Installation – Western Australia

ICON Engineering was commissioned by the Apache Energy Drilling Group to design shallow water monopod structures using specially reinforced 30" conductors as the platform legs. The philosophy requires that the conductors not only serve as surface casings of exploration wells, but they can also be retained for later conversion to minimal offshore structures in the event that a discovery is made.

Hookup and commissioning of these platforms is minimal due to their simplicity.

ARC Energy Ltd
Dongara, Western Australia

Platform Installation by Jackup Rig

ICON Engineering was commissioned by Shell to provide assistance with the installation of the Skiff platform in the Southern North Sea. The platform was installed by a jackup drilling rig. This was the first platform to be installed by this means in the UK sector of the North Sea. The installed cost was a fraction of that required using conventional methods

The project won the British Government Construction Industry Civil Engineering Award for 2000 in recognition of the novel design and installation method which challenged traditional practices.

Newfield Petroleum
Jabiru Field Abandonment Study

ICON Engineering was employed by Newfield to perform a study of the abandonment of the Jabiru Field. ICON produced a report outlining the costs and issues associated with the various options to assist the client in
discussions with regulatory authorities.

Nexen Petroleum
Buffalo Field Abandonment Strategy

In 2002, ICON was engaged by Nexen to assist in developing an abandonment strategy for the field.

The field consisted of a 380 tonne Wellhead Platform (WHP) linked to a 70,000 DWT FPSO anchored approximately 2km away in 300m water depth. The field was characterised by the fact that the WHP was on the steep edge of a shallow bank. The platform and FPSO were linked via a 10” Production Line, 4” Gas lift line and an umbilical.

Trencher Plough Feasibility Study
Woodside Offshore Petroleum
WA NW Shelf Second Trunkline Project

The study addressed trencher and plough options for stabilising the proposed 42” second trunkline. Trenching machine options were considered due to the existence of cap rock, which cannot be ploughed over a large proportion of the route. The concept utilised two powerful cutter slicers, which precede the plough and allow the material to be removed by the plough section.

This project was carried out in conjunction with several other specialist sub- consultants.

ICON Engineering Project

West Australian Petroleum (WAPET)
Reanalysis of Saladin A Platform and
Installation of Fourth Conductor, 1999

ICON Engineering was engaged to reanalyse the Saladin A platform to support an additional well conductor. The work involved analysis and detailed design work for the conductor guide and hatches. The optimum solution chosen utilised a single conductor guide just above water and avoided any installation work below the water surface. ICON provided a turnkey service covering conceptual and detailed design, fabrication, preparation of installation procedures and supervision of offshore installation.

Yammaderry And Cowle Joint Development Project
West Australian Petroleum Pty Limited 1991
Offshore Thevenard Island, NW Australia

The installation, hookup and commissioning work was undertaken by WAPET
in-house using a team led by current ICON Engineering Directors. The
substructure was lifted from the transportation supply vessel horizontally
and upended using the rig's draw works. The structures were installed into
foundation holes drilled using reverse circulation techniques. They were then
grouted into place.
