Re: US pipelines by abarrelfullabarrelfull, 22 May 2012 12:43

In response to a question in another thread, here is a brief comparison between biodiesel and renewable diesel.

Biodiesel has a number of important problems.

  • It has a lower energy density than diesel, leading to lower efficiency
  • It can only be used in low % blends in normal engines
  • It needs very high quality feedstock (both expensive and more valuable as food)
  • It cannot be stored for too long

A number of companies have developed processes to convert oils and fats into a better substitute for diesel than traditional biodiesel.

One is UOP, which has a Green Diesel process
Neste has opened a number of facilities producing its NExBTL diesel

Both of these processes, as far as I can tell, produce a complete substitute for Diesel, which have none of the downsides of biodiesel.

It seems to me that both of these processes are far superior to the second rate product that is currently being sold.

oh yes, thanks. i had actually already read that. i'd also read they planning to trade p66 the gas and ulsd for more jet fuel. I actually kind of like the idea of Delta buying a refinery to lower fuel cost, it seems like a pretty creative approach, though i'm very curious how well it works out for them.

i have another question. do you know where i can find info on the difference between biodiesel and renewable diesel? I'm understanding there is some distinction, in manufacture and certification?, that is of import. However, a lot of what i've found thus far is from '08 and '09 and seems to use the terms fairly interchangeably.

thanks

Re: US pipelines by abarrelfullabarrelfull, 18 May 2012 19:14

do you have a link to your blog topic on the Delta purchase?

Re: US pipelines by jmanfnobjmanfnob, 18 May 2012 17:25

I work in strategic planning, hence my wish to have a much broader knowledge of the market, and my employer is an independent European refiner.

On the Delta front, I wrote a blog about it. I think there are two parts to the question:
1) Is it a good idea for an airline to buy a refinery? Probably not, it seems unlikely that they can run it more successfully than an oil company
2) Is buying the Trainer refinery a good idea? That depends entirely on whether its possible to switch from using African crude to using Bakken or Canadian syncrude, because their problems all stem from having to use such expensive crude.

Re: US pipelines by abarrelfullabarrelfull, 17 May 2012 05:31

i'm curious to learn more about refineries too. what do you think of delta buying the trainer refinery? what kind of refinery work do you do?

Re: US pipelines by jmanfnobjmanfnob, 15 May 2012 17:31

Yes refineries is what I know best, but the site just kind of grew, and I am using the opportunity to learn about other parts of the sector.

Re: US pipelines by abarrelfullabarrelfull, 15 May 2012 17:16

More refinery focused?

Re: US pipelines by jmanfnobjmanfnob, 14 May 2012 21:03

To be honest its not an area of expertise. Thanks for the heads up I'll go away and add them

Am curious why Colonial, Explorer and Magellan pipelines aren't on your list of US pipelines.

I imagine that is a huge pipeline so I am interested in knowing more about it. The more we have better control on technology the more we'll benefit from it. Only recently I learned all about using an alignment sheet software, I imagine this is the kind of project where the software is indispensable.
