The EIA has an updated page on the world's Oil choke points

http://www.eia.gov/countries/regions-topics.cfm?fips=WOTC

In 2011, total world oil production amounted to approximately 88 million barrels per day (bbl/d), and over one-half was moved by tankers on fixed maritime routes. By volume of oil transit, the Strait of Hormuz leading out of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Malacca linking the Indian and Pacific Oceans are two of the world's most strategic chokepoints.

I imagine that is a huge pipeline so I am interested in knowing more about it. The more we have better control on technology the more we'll benefit from it. Only recently I learned all about using an alignment sheet software, I imagine this is the kind of project where the software is indispensable.

There is a great new report out on the LNG market

LNG Market in 2010 by abarrelfullabarrelfull, 10 May 2011 12:13

Reuters has been spreading nasty rumours about Saras. Saras denies the allegation.

Saras S.p.A. denies having sold or delivered gasoline to Libya's General National Maritime Transport Company (GNMTC). Saras S.p.A. is acting and has always acted in full compliance with all applicable restrictive measures concerning Libya.

Naughty press, slap wrists

Its nice to see thats the chaps at Forbes are up to speed with basic economics, not like commentators elsewhere.

  • Compare the wisdom of:

So how do oil traders’ supposedly pull off this feat of keeping oil prices elevated above the market clearing price? Well, there is only one way: Excess supply created by the artificially high price has to be stored, either in tanks or in the ground.

  • With the ignorance of:

Moammar Quadafi, violence in other MENA countries, and the metrics of supply and demand have all exerted a limited impact on oil prices these days. The much greater driver has been money flow and the velocity with which money has cascaded (largely unfettered) into most commodities, and particularly into WTI and Brent crude oil futures.

A civil war which reduces global demand for oil has less impact that trading in derivatives that does not impact on physical deliveries of crude. Doesn't make sense does it.

The need to shift refinery product distributions to a more diesel-oriented slate and to reduce residue fuel oil production is a constant global trend in refining. New, cost-effective and commercially proven technologies are required to achieve higher distillate yield and non-distillable conversion. For Russian and CIS Refiners, residue upgrading also remains a key challenge.

Due to relatively small investments over the past decades, Russia and CIS is one of the few regions that continue to look at major investment programs in the Downstream sector. The ambitious plans of Lukoil are good example of this.

Delegates of the Annual Russia & CIS Bottom of the Barrel Technology Conference and Exhibition (BBTC), organised by Euro Petroleum Consultants (EPC), will have the opportunity to hear about Lukoil’s plans for its refineries directly from the 1st Deputy Head of Refining & Petrochemicals - Mr Mikhail Antonov

Russia & CIS BBTC will be held on 13-14 April at the Marriott Grand Hotel in Moscow.

Building on the experience & great success of the past 5 years, Russia BBTC is the only event for Russia and the CIS market dedicated to the latest technology developments and economic trends for upgrading crude oil residues in Russia & CIS.

Comprehensive overview of the industry

The event will provide comprehensive and up-to-date overviews of the industry and the bunker fuel markets developments by Euro Petroleum Consultants, Purvin & Gertz and VNIPINEFT. There will be presentations from the leading licensor companies – Axens, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil R&E, Shell Global Soultions, KBR, Foster Wheeler and UOP on the latest technologies for Thermal Processes and Hydroprocessing, as well as presentations on the latest developments in catalysts, hydrogen and sulpher management and gasification.

The event will conclude with a panel session discussion, in which leading representatives of the main refineries and oil companies will answer questions posed by the audience and provide update on their future plans.

“I very much enjoyed the BBTC conference, it had a good balance between networking and technical content,” comments Carel Pouwels, Global FCC Specialist Resid, ALBEMARLE CATALYSTS on his experience at past BBTC events.

Annual April Refining, Gas & Petrochemicals Events

Russia & CIS is part of the Annual April Refining, Gas & Petrochemicals Events in Moscow organised by Euro Petroleum Consultants (EPC). This year, the week will also include a new, long-awaited event - The Projects Forum, directly before Russia & CIS BBTC (11-12 April in the same venue) which will focus on update and challenges of major downstream projects in progress and those in the pipeline of the leading Russia & CIS companies.

Being a leading independent consulting company providing advice and assistance through all stages of project analysis and implementation in the downstream industry, Euro Petroleum Consultants (EPC) has the expertise in the subject, which guarantees strong conference programmes. In addition, its extensive knowledge, based on over 20 years experience in Russia, CIS and Caspian countries, coupled with the long standing relations with many of the key operating companies, allows it to facilitate introductions between the delegates and create an event that guarantees effective networking with the right people. Organizers believe that this is one of the main advantages of the Russia & CIS events of EPC.

Valery Kouznetsov, Regional Sales Manager of UOP, supports this statement: “EPC's events are certainly the best for the CIS and Baltic States' refining and petrochemical industries. For me the most value is being able to meet so many clients and partners from Russia and CIS in one place. It is true that one EPC conference can substitute two months of continuous business trips."

Discussion and interaction

This time the organisers are planning to move away from the standard power-point-presentations-only format and allow more time for panel sessions with key players and discussions on all key areas of interest relating to the problems and challenges for project implementation in this area.

Day One will focus on the key issues relating to successful project implementation through all stages, in addition to the outlook for the industry in this region. Speakers and panellists will include AXENS, UOP, FOSTER WHEELER, IPA GLOBAL, TECNICAS REUNIDAS, SINOPEC, NEFTEKHIMPROGRESS and more.

Day Two will focus on discussions of actual projects being implemented and future projects. Owners, licensors, contractors and design institutes will discuss real issues and challenges and aim to provide a comprehensive update on major planned and current projects. Parties involved in the ongoing projects of the leading companies in this region, including Lukoil, Rosneft, Sibur, Slavneft, Gazprom Neft, TNK-BP, Naftan and Mozyr, have been invited to take part.

Current sponsors of the event include INVESYS PROCESS SYSTEMS, GEA MASHIMPEX and REEFING.

Excellent networking opportunities

Extensive industry knowledge, based on over 20 years experience in Russia, CIS and Caspian countries, and long-standing relations with many of the key operating companies, allows EPC to facilitate introductions between the delegates and create an event that guarantees effective networking with the right people.

Russia & CIS Bottom of the Barrel Technology Conference

The event will take place immediately before EPC’s popular residue upgrading event - the Russia & CIS Bottom of the Barrel Technology Conference & Exhibition (BBTC) on 13-14 April in the same venue.
This will be the 8th year that Euro Petroleum Consultants organise events for the refining & petrochemical industries in Russia & CIS. "I’m deeply convinced that EPC’s annual April Conferences can be considered an excellent learning platform for industry professionals and a perfect place for generating new ideas and solutions," comments Anatoly Artukh, General Director of NAFTAN and regular attendee of the EPC Russian events.

Deloitte, the business advisory firm, has produced its second full year ranking of UK upstream independent oil companies, based on market capitalisation.

Shell is to sell most of its African Downstream Assets. This is Bloomberg's take:

Shell to Divest About $1 Billion of Refining, Marketing Assets in Africa

However, when we read the version from Vitol, we understand that Bloomberg is making an error:

The deal covers existing Shell downstream businesses (Retail, Commercial Fuels, Liquefied Petroleum Gas, Lubricants, Bitumen, Aviation and Marine) in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt (excluding lubricants), Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Cape Verde, Kenya, Uganda, Madagascar and Mauritius. Shell’s downstream businesses in Namibia, Botswana, Togo, Tanzania and La Reunion are under review for potential inclusion in the deal at a later date.

In none of these countries does Shell own a refinery. There are no refineries included in the deal.

Slap on wrists for Bloomberg.

For details of all shell refineries

Proposed acquisition of Nexen Exploration UK Limited and Proposed Placing of 27,500,000 New IGAS Shares at a price of 75p per Placing Share

There is a distinct lack of companies looking for unconventional gas in the UK. IGas is one of the exceptions. Traded on AIM in London, it describes itself as:

IGas Energy was set up in 2003 to produce and market domestically sources gas from unconventional sources such as coal bed methane (CBM) and shales.

It is now planning to buy its partner:

On 31 January 2011 we announced that we had reached agreement on the terms of a proposal whereby IGAS will acquire the entire issued share capital of Nexen Exploration UK Limited.

Nexen Exploration UK Limited is the joint owner with Island Gas Limited (a wholly owned subsidiary of IGAS) of 11 UK Petroleum Exploration and Development Licences and three blocks within a seaward petroleum production licence. As a result of the Acquisition these licence interests will become wholly owned and operated by IGAS, increasing IGAS’s Contingent Recoverable Resource 2C (P50) by 115 per cent. to 1,736 bcf or 260 million barrels of oil equivalent and its current net production rate will almost triple.

Not earth shattering perhaps, but another small step forward in Europe's unconventional natural gas story.

U.S. energy giant Exxon said it planned to invest hundreds of millions of euros in Germany to tap what are estimated to be vast quantities of natural gas reserves, in an interview to be published Monday.

The chairman of Exxon Mobil Central Europe, Gernot Kalkoffen, told German business daily Handelsblatt that the company believed the state of North Rhine-Westphalia had huge amounts of gas to drill.

If you are trying to follow the exploits of the small UK listed oil & gas companies, then its can be hard work seeing as there are so many of them. So I was happy to find Small Cap News which has a weekly round up of the news from these companies.
