Ongoing Projects/Project Status

  • In 2009, Dominion filed an application with FERC to reinforce the offshore platform at Cove Point to accommodate its customers and the recent advances in LNG ship technology and to enable the safe docking, off-loading, and departure from the pier of larger-sized LNG vessels now coming into service worldwide.
  • The modifications will enable Cove Point to receive vessels carrying larger cargoes than the current maximum capacity of 148,000 cubic meters can be handled. The modifications will allow DCP to receive vessels carrying cargoes of up to 267,000 cubic meters.

History

  • 1978 - Terminal operations began
  • 1995 - Columbia Gas reopened the facility for storage and peak-shaving operations.
  • 2000 - Williams purchased Cove Point from Columbia
  • 2001 - The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission reaffirmed its decision authorizing Cove Point LNG Limited Partnership to reactivate and expand the liquified natural gas (LNG) facility
  • 2003 - The terminal began recieving LNG cargos
  • 2009 - Terminal Expansion completed with the addition of two new 160,000-cubic meter (m3) LNG storage tanks and additional vaporization capacity
  • 2011 - Dominion Files With Department of Energy to Export LNG From Cove Point
