Brief Description

  • The Marathon Texas City refinery is one of the largest and most complex in the U.S., with a Nelson complexity index of 15.3. The facility is strategically positioned to provide products throughout the U.S. Gulf Coast, Midwest and Southeast, as well as into export markets. The refinery has the flexibility to process a wide range of crude oils, and has access to price-advantaged mid-continent and Canadian crudes via pipelines as well as waterborne cargoes.

  • 2005 - A major explosion killed 15 workers at the refinery and injured many more.
  • 2011 - BP decided to sell the refinery
  • 2012 - BP agrees to pay more than $13 million and abate violations in settlement agreement with US Department of Labor
  • 2012 - Marathon Petroleum acquired the refinery from BP
  • 2013 - Marathon completes the acquistion from BP
